The Popcorn Isn't Real · Ep. 94 (Tim Burton Fetish Fantasy Theory)
Tim Burton has been filming his cuckold fantasy for thirty years
Helena Bonham Carter, Lisa Marie, Eva Green, Monica Bellucci. Every woman Burton dates lands the same part, the woman who throws herself at his leading man.
Burton Films His Own Cuckold Fantasy
In 1994 Tim Burton made Ed Wood, a film about a director with a sexual secret who puts hints about his real life into his movies. Wood cast himself as the lead and his girlfriend as his love interest, and the film plays almost like a biopic of Burton. Burton's own 1990s girlfriend, Lisa Marie, plays Vampira in it, lusted after on a television screen by Bela Lugosi. So Burton was already putting his real girlfriend on screen for another man to desire.
Burton and Helena Bonham Carter met making Planet of the Apes in 2001, had two kids, and split in 2014. Through those years she appeared in nearly every major film he directed, as a woman who throws herself at his leading man. That leading man, usually Johnny Depp, sometimes Michael Keaton, stands in for Burton, just as Wood played his own lead. In Big Fish she wants Edward Bloom, who sees only his wife. As Mrs. Lovett she gives Sweeney Todd everything, and he ignores her and finally murders her. As Emily in Corpse Bride she believes she is married to Victor, who only wants to escape her. When Burton got down on one knee, it was to offer Bonham Carter the part of the Red Queen. She had thought he was proposing!
After the split the casting moved on to his next partners. In Dumbo his rumored girlfriend Eva Green flirts with Colin Farrell's cowboy while Michael Keaton's showman watches, enraptured. In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice his girlfriend Monica Bellucci plays Delores, the ex who stalks Beetlejuice until he banishes her for good. So the pattern follows Burton's real love life.
He likes watching this scene play out enough to keep filming it. So Tim Burton is acting out a cuckold fantasy on the big screen, using his real girlfriends and a leading man who stands in for himself.
The evidence
Two Houses, One Hallway, Thirteen Years
They met on Planet of the Apes and stayed until 2014.
Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter met in 2001 while making Planet of the Apes and stayed together until 2014. They had two kids and lived in two houses joined by a connecting hallway, which is one house by any other name. Before you say "They never married," know that both of them called the 2014 split a DIVORCE. So this was a marriage in every way that counts. Through those years Burton cast her in nearly every major film he directed, usually opposite his on-screen stand-in, most often Johnny Depp. That makes Burton's partner of thirteen years the woman at the center of his films.
Jenny Was Every Other Woman
She tried to win Edward Bloom. He only ever saw his wife.
In Big Fish, Jenny tries to get Edward Bloom, played young by Ewan McGregor, to cheat on his wife with her, and she gets nowhere. He never does, because he sees only his wife. Jenny later explains it to Edward's son. For his father there were only two women in the world, his wife and every other woman. She was every other woman, so of course she was the witch. And Burton cast Helena Bonham Carter as BOTH the witch and Jenny! Big Fish is the first of her Burton roles built this way, and it sets the rule for every part that follows. She wants the leading man, and he only sees his wife.
Mrs. Lovett Even Cooked His Victims for Him
She gives Sweeney a shop and her devotion, and he kills her.
From the start of Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett is hopelessly devoted to Sweeney, doting on him and throwing herself at him. She gives him a place of business and her entire attention. Then she helps him murder, and she cooks his victims to hide the evidence. All along, Sweeney only has eyes for his wife, who he believes is dead, and he ignores and mistreats Mrs. Lovett. In the end it turns out she had let him believe his wife was dead, and that tricked him into killing his own wife. So he murders Mrs. Lovett too! She gives him everything she has, he never returns any of it, and then he kills her.
A Whole Song About Retiring by the Sea
Mrs. Lovett plans their old age together. Sweeney gives her nothing.
Look for anything Sweeney gives back in Mrs. Lovett's song about the sea, and you will come up empty. She spends the whole movie trying to get him to want her, and she even sings an ENTIRE song begging him to retire with her by the sea so they can grow old together. It is her full fantasy of a life with him, and if he felt anything for her, this is where he would give a little back. He gives her nothing, because he is not having it. That proves Sweeney wants no life with Mrs. Lovett.
A Wedding Ring on the Wrong Finger
An accidental ring, a dead bride, and a groom desperate to escape.
Victor's wedding ring ends up on the finger of a dead woman, and it gets there by accident. That woman is Emily, voiced by Helena Bonham Carter, opposite Johnny Depp as Victor. Emily believes they are now married. She loves him and wants him more than anything. He does not care about her. To him she is a monstrous force chasing him and locking him into a horrible marriage to a dead woman. All he wants is to get away from her and back to the living bride he was meant to marry. Once again Burton casts his partner as the woman fiercely pursuing his stand-in, and here she is literally the bride Victor is running from.
We'll Be Down Here Snogging
At the Harry Potter reunion, Bonham Carter flirts and Radcliffe laughs nervously.
Back when they made the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe had a huge crush on Helena Bonham Carter. She has said it was a shame they were not closer in age. Years later, they are interviewed together for a reunion, and she is all over him. She flirts constantly while he laughs nervously and looks a little uncomfortable. Then, walking down a staircase on a set built to look like the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts, she calls out. "We'll be down here snogging." Off screen, Bonham Carter plays the same part, the woman throwing herself at the leading man, and here the leading man is the younger Radcliffe.
Four Girlfriends, One Part
Burton split from Bonham Carter in 2014. The part stayed with him.
Maybe you're thinking "Helena Bonham Carter just gets typecast." If so, the part would start and end with her. Before her, Burton dated Lisa Marie through the 1990s and cast her in Ed Wood. He split from Bonham Carter in 2014, and the part kept going! His rumored girlfriend during Dumbo (2019) was Eva Green, who plays a main character. He has since dated Monica Bellucci and cast her in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). Every one of these women is cast opposite another man in a romantic or sexual setup. If this were only typecasting, the part would have left with Bonham Carter. It moved with Burton, so it goes to whoever he is dating at the time.
On One Knee for the Red Queen
Called to Burton's office, Bonham Carter thought he was going to propose.
Burton got down on one knee in front of Helena Bonham Carter, and there was no ring. Around 2008 the two were living together with a child when he asked her to his office for a meeting. She wondered what he could not tell her over breakfast and thought he was going to propose. On one knee, he asked if she might play the Red Queen in his Alice in Wonderland! He had a sketch to show her, a massive-headed, ugly Red Queen, and he told her he had drawn her without intending to. In Burton's life the casting offer took the place of the proposal, which tells you the films are where the relationship happens.
The Red Queen Ends Up With Time
She shrinks the Hatter's family to ants and takes up with Time.
Someone will say the Red Queen never chases the Hatter romantically. That objection only holds until the sequel. In Alice in Wonderland she keeps Johnny Depp's Hatter prisoner, and she is flattered when he talks about putting a hat on her giant head. In Alice Through the Looking Glass, which Burton produced, she has shrunk the Hatter's family to ant size and keeps them in an ant farm she shakes up. And she is in a relationship with Time, played by Sacha Baron Cohen! That film was shot in 2014, the year Burton and Bonham Carter split. Burton's partner ends her run as the Red Queen paired off with another man, which is exactly the cuckold setup Burton keeps filming.
Colette Calls Herself One of Vandevere's Gems
She reflects the showman's light while flirting with the one-armed cowboy.
In Dumbo, Eva Green's Colette calls herself one of the many gems Vandevere decorates himself with, there to reflect the light back onto him. And she says it WHILE flirting with Holt, the one-armed cowboy played by Colin Farrell. Officially Colette is with Vandevere, the owner of the big circus and the film's main villain, played by Michael Keaton. Burton directed Dumbo after his split from Bonham Carter, when Green was his rumored girlfriend, and he puts her in a heavily belted black corset with ruffles, his favorite look. This suggests the gems line is Burton describing himself, an older showman whose young girlfriends reflect the light back onto him, and who prefers to see them with younger men.
The Cowboy Made Him a Child Again
Vandevere watches his girlfriend ride Dumbo and praises the one-armed cowboy.
Later in Dumbo, Eva Green's Colette rides around on Dumbo while Michael Keaton's Vandevere watches, enraptured. Still watching, he speaks to Colin Farrell's character, the one-armed cowboy she has been flirting with. "You beautiful one-armed cowboy, you've made me a child again." His girlfriend is the one riding Dumbo, and he gives the credit to the same man she has been flirting with! Keaton is one of the actors Burton uses as his on-screen stand-in, so this is Burton's stand-in getting his thrill from watching his younger girlfriend with another man.
Delores Killed Him, Then Got Banished Forever
Burton's girlfriend plays the soul-sucker who stalks Beetlejuice until he banishes her.
In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton cast his girlfriend, Monica Bellucci, as Delores, a soul-sucker. Delores and Beetlejuice, played by Michael Keaton, had a relationship with great sex, and then she killed him. Now she says nobody else can have him. So she stalks him mercilessly, tracking him down, always present and always coming after him. Beetlejuice wants nothing to do with her, so in the end he banishes her forever. That makes Delores the woman obsessed with the leading man, rejected and thrown out. And Burton gave this part to the woman he is dating right now, so Delores is the pattern at its peak.
Glen or Glenda Told Ed Wood's Secret
Burton picked a director who put his own secret on film.
In 1994 Burton directed Ed Wood, a star-studded biopic with Johnny Depp as Wood. The real Wood made bad 1950s B movies like Plan 9 from Outer Space. He liked to put on women's clothes and did not tell everyone. So his film Glen or Glenda, about a person torn between being Glen or Glenda, was a movie about his own secret. He cast himself as the main character and his girlfriend as the love interest. Therefore Wood was putting hints about his real life into his movies so people would know. Burton chose to film THAT man, and the movie plays almost like a biopic of Burton himself. Burton made a movie about a director who hid his sexual secret in his own films, because that is exactly what Burton does in his.
Lugosi Hypnotizes Burton's Girlfriend Through the Screen
Ed watches while Lugosi claims Vampira as his love slave.
In Ed Wood, Ed (Johnny Depp) and Bela Lugosi sit to watch Lugosi's old movie White Zombie on television. The broadcast is hosted by Vampira, a busty Elvira-style horror hostess. Vampira is played by Lisa Marie, Burton's girlfriend through the 1990s until 2001. While she is on screen, Lugosi lusts after her and comments on her chest. Then he raises his hands, fingers bent Dracula-style to hypnotize her, and tells the television she shall be his love slave! Ed watches and asks how Lugosi does that with his fingers. Lugosi explains that he is double-jointed. So Burton's real girlfriend is on a screen, desired by another man, while Burton's stand-in sits beside Lugosi and watches.
Coraline Keeps Getting Credited to Tim Burton
Burton's name went into the title of Henry Selick's movie.
Your gut says "Burton made The Nightmare Before Christmas, his name is in the title." Henry Selick directed that movie, and it was released as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Later Selick films like James and the Giant Peach were sold as coming from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, without his name, so audiences assumed they were Burton's. Selick has said EVERY time he makes a movie like Coraline, it gets credited to Tim Burton. So Burton's name went on Selick's movie, and Selick has been stuck in Burton's shadow ever since.
